Google maps throws an error any time I try to search a location while VPN is enabled (iOS). At least when off WiFi.

Anyone else have this?

Suggests to me another example of how their service isn’t “free” but is only provided in exchange for the literal doxxing of my device, location, and likely identity……. Damn sketchy that is.

We all need to have better reflexes to use other services than Google first.

What do you recommend for an iPhone user

Well, Apple is a strong concurrent of Google in the online map market. Apple has it's own flavor: https://www.apple.com/maps/

True. I used Apple Maps years ago and felt like it was pretty mediocre. Although I’m sure it must have improved in recent years. I’ll give it another chance

Lol, I remember it getting memed to death because it was telling people to cross random bodies of water for no reason. Its just as good as google now afaict

LOL I remember that

That’s good to hear

Don’t have this issue with Apple Maps + VPN. Have you tried OsmAnd as an open alternative? It’s been a while for me but I seem to remember it being pretty solid!

Haven’t tried it, but thanks for the rec!

At least with Apple I’ve entered into an agreement to pay for their services and have some expectation that my data is stored securely (even if it’s stored).

With Google I get the sense it’s much more insidious and deceptive

iOS VPN settings suck
