The only thing I'd add is that given the over-regulated environment we live in, it may be cheaper to get rid of the old stuff now than both the (now) new and old insulation 20 years from now!

The olde insulation can have fermaldahyde+wotsit.... asbestos in it so yeah maybe get rid of the old stuff now so you don't have to (possibly) mitigate later.

Also if you sell the house you can say the attic is clear of asbestos+modern-kewl or whatever!
