Is this whole thing a layer on-top of VMs/containers for SATs? I still think there is value in having super generic machines that users can run whatever they want on...
General purpose compute for sats
After several iterations of (GitHub) Actions runners I recently had some very good conversations that helped boil the whole thing down to one core component: Paid subprocesses.
The idea:
- IN: cmd + args + stdin + env + 🥜 money
- OUT: stdout + stderr + 🥜 change
⚠️ I'm showing a hacky proof of concept, by no means production ready. This is just to get the idea out.
- Operators advertise their preinstalled software. (ffmpeg, ngit, act, etc...)
- User filters operators by software/architecture.
- Operator can whitelist users
Workflows (CI/CD):
- Doing workflows will be a layer on top of this.
- Deals with the complexity of the ACT runners and (n)git.
- All the workflow orchestrator would need is an operator that runs both ngit and act (or install it manually as part of the exec).
Other stuff:
- Use this to run one-off video transcoding jobs on specialized hardware
- Video rendering
- Audio transcription
- [your creative idea here]

This is specifically a job-based approach with pre-installed software & optimizations. I think it's a fundamentally different use-case than renting the long-running compute you seem to refer to.
I like the idea of being able to pay for small amounts of compute and/or small periods of time. However, my concern is that the service might be specific to a very niche use case.
Can I run anything I want on it in the same way that I would with a VPS that I rented for 3 minutes?
Perhaps I'm missing the objective..
I guess a question of efficiency. Having things pre-installed makes sense if I only need them briefly and a large portion of my costs are setup & teardown. Perhaps what your making here is a framework for people to make their custom pre-installed environment...
There's a spectrum of applications that need compute
[specific]| -----------|[fully custom]
example of specific: convert png -> jpg, one-off task
example of custom: running a webserver with self-developed software, long running
I think this solution serves the middleground, where someone needs some software pre-installed and ready-to-go but needs it only briefly for a self-defined task. GitHub actions being one such use-case.
