pretty funny, here we are in our little corner on the edge of the internet, with our humble zaps now for nearly 2 years, and suddenly the biggest twitter-like silo wants to enable zaps

On a serious note, I don't agree with it 😛 but now I see the kind of behavior they were frustrated with. I think they're blaming the wrong thing it's not "likes" that is the problem. It's treating "attention" as a currency, likes just become a mechanism to measure attention.
Yep, I think we need both. I’ll like a post to confirm that I’ve seen it, but I’ll zap it if it has some value to me.
