Jesus was an important, charismatic rabbi, who influenced so many followers that he threatened the Roman occupation of Israel and was executed accordingly. Hundreds of years later, various powers, including the pagan Roman emperor Constantine, found it politically useful to curate various interpretations and accounts of the rabbi’s teachings at his Nicene Council into a common document, to maintain state control over proliferating Christian sects that were in conflict with each other. Over centuries of theological debate, some warring Catholic and Orthodox interpretations found it useful to elevate the rabbi to a mythical level equal to the monotheistic God. God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Ghost. Some sects never accepted this formulation, but state persecutions and church-state alliances largely stamped the heretics out. Hope that helps.
