He is very public about the fact he is just doing it for the money, and he doesn't even think it is a viable idea. So, in that sense, he literally sold out. L2L also paid Peter Todd to evaluate drivechains and he did so in an extremely skeptical fashion.
L2L has to pay people who don't even believe in the project just to move forward. That is about as fiat as it gets.
