Too many people already commented and I'm a bit lazy to read it all... I would just, say keep it Vanilla to start. Mint is not bad and it's what I recommend for most folks. Other than that Fedora works pretty well. Linux folks like to send users straight to rolling releases, but I would spend some time with a more traditional distro, figure out what desktop environment and window manger you like, etc. I spent some time in openSUSE and Arch, both are brilliant but I would still pick SUSE for a rolling release.
