I think they started hurting the predators down to protect livestock, not wildlife prey.

As an unintended consequence the wild prey populations exploded and therefore their numbers need controlling.

But isn’t that a self-inflicted problem? Wolves exist precisely to regulate prey populations naturally. If humans interfere with nature by eliminating predators, they inevitably create imbalances that require further intervention elsewhere. Isn’t that a bit ironic?

This is kind of modern knowledge.

In the old days they just wanted to get rid of the problem, the wolves.

The awakening to the unintended consequences came later.

We always understand things better looking back.
