I've heard senders get good privacy over lightning. If one buys BTC on KYC exchange and then sends small amounts spaced out over several days by lightning (maybe even through 2 different non-KYC wallets like Mutiny etc) and eventually puts it back in addresses you control, is it traceable back to your KYC info?

Thanks for any thoughts/advice.

Definitely a good way to add some anonymity and plausible deniability.

If if you swap out KYC for non kyc, there's still the link to the exchange where the Bitcoin was bought.

There's the real danger.

true-I do understand that. I was just wondering if the lightning hops would have a similar result as doing a whirlpool as far as obfuscating where it ends up.

As far as I know and understand, yes.

I think the real danger of your idea is also the benefit. If you were being investigated and the non-KYC wallets were somehow tied to you then you might be in danger of enhanced charges such as interfering with an investigation or fraud, or whatever. That being said, they would have to tie a non-KYC wallet to you as an individual.

If the government decides to investigate you, they can still easily find out, by asking the KYC exchange, how much Bitcoin you purchased and when.

They will also be able to see that you sent it somewhere, that you paid a lightning invoice.

I guess you can claim you later lost the coins.

And it will be very hard to prove you did not.

I guess they can say capital tax gain tax is due anyway, as they know you had Bitcoin.

Who knows what is going to happen and how tyrannical the governments may become.

But also, in another future dystopian scenario, to legally spend or sell Bitcoin, you may be forced to show the source of funds!

If this happens, KYC-ed Bitcoin may be "better" and non KYC-ed you will only be able to sell using shadow peer to peer markets, probably at discount, like an illegal good.

We just don't know. I may be too pessimistic.

Of course I hope none of this happens, we will have freedom respecting governments everywhere and Bitcoin will be tax free.

I wonder what others think on this.
