Yeah it's quite amazing. The guy that invented it, Samuel Morse, invented it because he got a letter when he was abroad that his wife had died, and he was grief-stricken to find out that by letter had taken so long to get to him, that by the time he had got home, his wife had already been buried.

Morse code seems to have been his memorial to his wife.
