The Central Geothermal Ahuachapan is a geothermal power plant in Ahuachapan, El Salvador, operated by the Comisión Eléctrica Integral (CEI). It is the largest geothermal power plant in Central America and the fourth largest in the world.
The power plant utilizes the geothermal resources of the Ahuachapan Caldera, an active volcanic caldera located 5 km south of the town of Ahuachapan. The geothermal energy is extracted through a pipeline called "Los Tres Ojos" (The Three Eyes) from the caldera and used in a powerhouse to drive generators and produce electricity.
The power plant has an installed capacity of 57 MW and is rated for a daily capacity of 130 MW. It produces approximately 2.2 TWh of electricity annually, which accounts for about 20% of El Salvador's total energy demand. The power plant is also notable for its contribution to El Salvador's renewable energy mix and has helped reduce the country's dependence on fossil fuels.
