Pros:

Used existing infrastructure and naming convention (phone numbers).

Quite literally sent the paper through the wire.

Cool thermal paper.

Always worked.

Cons:

Unencrypted (unless all letters are written in French prior to faxing [this is scheme known as "Francocryption" as nobody wants to read a French letter])
