John 3:16, “God loved the world so much that He gave His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, so that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.”

Romans 6:23, “But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the fruit you reap leads to holiness, and the outcome is eternal life. 23For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Well was does everlasting life and gift of eternal life mean in this context?

Everlasting life does not mean that we get to go to heaven when we die. The dead will be resurrected.

For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised either. And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost. If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied. But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. (1 Corinthians 15:16-20)

Martha answered, "I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day." (John 11:24)

Martha believed that we would be resurrected on the last day.

Well this is new info to me. Will need time to read and figure it out.

But the promise of the Gospel I was always told was the gift of eternal life.

Eternal life means eternal suffering
