Question for my permaculture friends: is the black pieces left over in my wood stove what is meant by "biochar"? Is this look and texture the goal? And, if so, can I save these pieces over time to use in my garden?

Probably, you can use the hotel tray in the fireplace and soon as it stops burning the gas, remove the tray with your wood contents.
