The continually decreasing price and increasing size & features of televisions is at the very least a metaphor for how all goods should get better and cheaper over time. It's like a peek behind the iron curtain of inflation.

in a way, it's one of the least consumeristic products. you buy one for the next 5-10 years, therefore for the manufacturers, it ends up being a race to the bottom, and from there, a race to innovation, which would fascinate people enough to get a new one
