#AskNostr: I was thinking about this yesterday...

Would you consider #Nostr a "rabbit hole" in the same way we often attribute #Bitcoin?

My personal opinion is no, because despite it being a paradigm-shifting advancement in the core pillar of communication, it's actually quite simple in how it fixes the problem, by replacing a centralized structure with a decentralized one.

Not that this makes it any less amazing of course...it just doesn't seem like there are as many tangential threads to pull on as BTC, outside of perhaps studying how the early internet/centralized Big Tech platforms have failed, and how decentralizing the stack will enable free speech and infinite buildability.

Perhaps my opinion will change as we see more and more applications emerge, and it completely transforms how the internet itself operates. Time will tell.

Curious of everyone else's thoughts - do you consider Nostr a "rabbit hole"?

I would lean yes because the full potential of nostr is not yet known. For example, nosfabrica and changing the paradigm of health care data .

The Bitcoin rabbit hole is narrow and then broadens out the more you discover. I see nostr very similar. People will and are adopting as a social media alternative to big tech, but it has the ability to go way beyond social media. I could host my entire farm business on here if I wanted. It could swallow all e commerce transactions in the future buying directly from producers with no middlemen.

The potential is unbound which is my base case for defining a rabbit hole.

You make very valid points, but it doesn't fix "the" problem. It will fix an unknown number of problems with centralization. We could very well be looking at a future where families run nostr relays alongside Bitcoin nodes.

Nostr has unlimited potential but I wouldn't call it a "rabbit hole". There aren't any dark areas to explore, at least not yet.

Bitcoin / Crypto aside, the entire reputation and purpose of nostr relies upon the kind of apps being built in the future. If we as a people worldwide are still being tracked, surveilled & monitored somehow then nostr failed in my book. There are already reports that #nostr is being monitored which makes me a bit uneasy.
