Coracle is my default recommendation for newbies. Nostrudel, for someone more advanced, who doesn't mind the functionality constantly changing.
Both handle communities and long-form well. Coracle even shows highlights.

I forget coracle does communities, I need to explore that bit more. In general coracle is best atm for browser. (Just bear in mind you won't see reposted notes unless they are quoted reposts).
Nostrudel profile pages are very useful to see what communities people are part of.
