I think it might be more related to needing a minimum money if coordinates to define one's position in relation to the origin of a plane.

That plane would likely be derived from the sun or other somesuch, though. Hmmmm....

Well, it was for navigation. Compass works when you can't see the sun or stars, as magnetic north is quite close to the geographic pole.

Yes, but, the compass, the concept of NESW, all predate the magnetic compass, at least from what I know.
