I personally am not sure how the reality actually is. But to me the official theory is nothing more than a theory. I always prefer to rely on personally observable or provable phenomena, and when it comes to space one can't do much but trust someone else's stories and interpretations.
The experimental data since Galileo is out there, publicly available for free. You can replicate the experiments yourself, if you so wish.
That's very vague, most of the experiments are trying to prove the shape and size of earth but they only do so by applying some underlying assumptions to observations, without which they are open to all kind of different interpretations. When it comes to space it gets even worse in that sense.
