The insidious creep of statism is partially enabled by the lack of understanding the difference between good ideas and laws. Wearing a seat belt is a good idea. Who could argue against that? Locking someone in a cage or forced labor if you don't comply, that's a much tougher sell. But the effort and risk around arguing the nuance of why a good idea is not a good law leaves most intelligent folks avoiding the discussion altogether, while those who don't understand the difference continue to implement laws "for the good of society".
