I've learned something profound about community since moving to a rural area. The bonds among neighbors are not dependent on similar outlooks and folks near us don't need to be our new best friends. The relationships actually kind of transcend world views and experience and just require decency, respect, and the willingness to help. We have each other's backs and will help each other in a pinch.

I actually saw that a bit on my (densely urban and diverse) street growing up, but otherwise it hasn't been my experience living in cities.
