The United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and Portugal formally declared their recognition of a Palestinian state on Sunday ahead of the United Nations General Assembly.
France and several other countries are expected to also recognize Palestine this week, joining the more than 140 countries who already recognize a Palestinian state.
Several members of the Israeli government responded to the developments by calling for Israel to annex the Occupied West Bank. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel would formulate a response after meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump next week, suggesting that annexation, further settlement growth and other moves aimed at undercutting a Palestinian state are dependent on U.S. diplomatic cover.
