Islam has done a terrible job encouraging the arts over the past century (maybe longer). Focus has all been on how many STEM professionals we can create. The steriotype of kids having to be dr, engineer, scientist. Really damaged our creative abilities so that now we either look at our own trying to innovate in this space and call them bad muslims or just have patheticly poor taste where we imitate everything western (or eastern now too?).

As Islam currently struggles with its own identity in hypermodernity it leans into doubling down on its own racial steriotypes (arab, desi, etc). This will have an interesting effect where western islamic culture gets formed from multiple directions. At one point it wants to distignish itself from secular western society while at the same time it wants to show itself as unique and yet derivitive of traditional islamic culture. It makes for the perfect oportunity for a techno-islamic synthesis. Very excited for this!

This isn't the fault of Islam but the fault of Muslims. Islam doesn't curtail creativity it filters and improves it. What Muslims have done is followed certain rigid ways of doing things and stuck to it instead of letting the Deen allow the flourishing of our societies in the modern world.

And something to keep in mind, Islam is from our creator so best to be careful when blaming it for things that the creation succumbs to.

"Islam doesn't curtail creativity it filters and improves it."

💯

Beautiful insight! To clarify I'm using "Islam" in the anthropological sense of a civilzation/society and not as a critic of the religion.

Jazakhallah Khair for the clarification.

I'm hoping our society takes advantage of what's to come and starts to focus on things other then as you've mentioned STEM. Though we should take the helm there as well but do it in a way that's not imitating others but charting our own course without foregoing our Deen.

inshaAllah!
