During the Napoleonic Wars, the residents of the English town Hartlepool publicly hanged a monkey thinking it was a French spy, the monkey being the only survivor of a French shipwreck off the coast and no one from Hartlepool has ever seen one before.

"Monkey Hanger" remains a colloquial term for locals to this day.
