Before Gutenbergās movable-type printing press, every book was a masterpiece. Only great books could afford to be hand-copied by scribes.
After the printing press we got flyers, advertisements, pornography, journals, newspapers, theses, novels, etc. etc. Quantity skyrocketed, but average quality tanked.
