The Bitcoin Core App is making progress. The block status has been implemented for the most part and the basic wallet features are there as well. Currently, the dev team is sorting out some stuff around code organization and build system - basically how this new application code fits in with the rest of Bitcoin Core code. And then afterwards we'll get back to UI implementation. Fingers crossed we can get a public release within a year or so, once the implementation has reached feature parity with the current QT GUI. It's a big, big project.
