In The End of Eternity, Asimov uses the concept of the MNC, or minimum necessary change. Characters who manipulate events across the flow of time seek to make the smallest possible change that will accomplish their goal, such as flattening a tire to avert a war.
In Breaking Bad, Mike chides Walter for using half measures, that end up failing, to accomplish a goal when a full measure would have succeeded. No more half measures.
The balance in life is knowing what is a minimum necessary change, and what is a worthless half measure.
