Every monero node can be a mining node, if the operator chooses to mine. This is unlike BTC where Asics present a huge barrier to entry. Non mining nodes in any proof of work network are useless except for verifying your own transactions. I agree we should figure out a way to prioritize mining on p2pool rather than centralized pools.
