As far as JRPG heroes go, I think Ash is a pretty underrated one. It's not that he's especially complex but that's also part of what I like about him. He's remarkably straight forward and well defined. He has a strong moral compass but is still troubled by his father's, alleged, crimes. I also like that he has a decently mature approach to problems. He knows the system is kind of busted but tries to fix it from within as long as he can and once he can't do that he doesn't really dwell long on the moral dichotomy and instantly goes to do the right thing.
