According to Iraqi government officials, Iraq right now is continuing to import natural gas from Iran despite the expiration today of an energy waiver provided by the United States, adding that they are working on alternative plans in case the gas supply is fully cut-off by Iran due to non-payment. The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity states that they are attempting to obtain another 120-day or longer waiver from the United States, which would allow them to continue purchasing natural gas and other energy imports from Iran that they are dependent on, though they are prepared in case no extension is given; with it expected that the U.S. under the Trump Administration will not grant an extension, as U.S. President Trump has called for a “Campaign of Maximum Pressure” on the Islamic Republic of Iran.
