There's a deep technical difference between a system that's purely custodial (bank accounts, stock portfolios, Wallet of Satoshi, Kraken) and one that's a mix of both like ecash or sidechains, where the IOU is non-custodial but the Bitcoin it represents is not on your control.
It's like the old days, where stock certificates were bearer instruments
