Hearing lots of stories from post-graduate Brazilians having their social media scrutinized during the tourist VISA interview (to come for conferences and such) and being questioned on the use of words like "vaccines", "black community" or that previously criticized this administration, and getting eventually rejected.

Similarly, US researchers applying for grants have received guidance to replace words commonly associated with the left with abbreviations or alternative spellings to avoid triggering keyword search and immediate rejection.

"It looks like the [brazilian, 1960-1984] dictatorship all over again. What they don't know is that we spent 20 years communicating what could not be said out loud. Controlling speech doesn't work."

before the internet and social media, things were different. Nowadays, unless one is highly disciplined, it’s challenging to express yourself in a way that satisfies everyone, especially when narratives shift so dramatically.
