This may be an incredibly dumb question, but why doesn’t nostr allow people to signup with other platforms?

Could it not just generate a key for you no matter which service you signed up with?

Or is this technically impossible?

what do you mean exactly by other platforms?

Pull data from Twitter, Google, Facebook, Apple, Instagram, LINE.

Interesting idea, at least bootstrapping all the acct info:

- avatar

- bio

- cover image

Maybe going through the social graph and suggesting friends who are already on Nostr

Exactly. Could also just show the login keys right after and some notice in dashboard to save them asap.

Or even just save them in the keychain automatically

Why should I as a user bother copying the key and pasting it to the keychain

That should be possible 🤔

💡

You mean to have a smoother onboarding?

Yep.

Yes, I spent a big chunk of my time yesterday figuring things out

This. 😆

I'm not a dev but isn't nostr exactly fixing this, because web2 platforms are all operating in a different way and pulling data is almost impossible?

That’s what I’m asking. If we can have a hybrid approach that doesn’t scrap everything and makes use of existing tech to bootstrap this one.

No biggie if impossible. Just trying to see if there is a way to smooth out onboarding so it’s dead simple.

Which social networks do you cae in mind to onboard from?

Twitter, Facebook, Google auth, Instagram (maybe Apple if using Apple device on mobile?)

Those that have api access and have auth to prove the authenticity are easy to implement

But nostr seems to mostly have twitter-like clients and i’d assume that providing a refuge from twitter would be most desired

🤷‍♂️

The types of clients will vary and explode soon enough

That’s doable.

A website built on nostr could create links that when followed from other social media sites route through a key gen and auto bio scrape + insert process and drop you into nostr with a temp account.

Maybe an Auth0 route? Lots of ways to do it.

Could create temporary “tourist keys” for people following links from elsewhere that then allow them to immediately engage when they land.

This is perfectly possible, as long as other platforms are willing to accept the interface for Nostr account logins, provided that the logins are authorized. Instead of logging in directly with a private key.

That's what i started building in Nostrica

Oh nice! Did you run into any issues?

not really at all.
