So the TLDR; while they do good charity work, they want the tax benefits without the strictness of the original writing because their lifestyle doesn’t fit it? Or is that not really a fair overview.

Not a bad summary. And thank you for asking the original question. I might add that the philosophical foundation of their slide away from those original writings is the desire to be their own source of authority. Much like the story of Gen 1-3, they wanted to not just "know" good and evil but actually determine it for themselves. The current Episcopal church wants to say that what has been called bad in the past is actually good and what was good in the past is actually bad. That's a lot of power over people.
