I've always wondered whether animals (birds, dogs..maybe all of them?) can actually sense, maybe by sound, changes in atmospheric pressure that would allow them to know when bad weather (that is, dropping atmospheric pressure) is on the way. Dogs have a wider range of hearing (I think?), so I wonder if thunder produces some truly terrifying low notes that humans can't hear?
