Harm is more like a physical injury. Pain is a sensation
Discussion
Okay , so you can harm someone without causing them pain?
Definitely. The person who gets shot in the head in their sleep and dies instantly doesn’t feel pain. Same for the guy in a wheelchair who gets his leg cut off.
Both are harmed
Is suicide harm?
Yes. It’s definitely harm but not necessarily pain. Depends on the method
So if violence is physical harm , and harm does not require awareness of being harmed or pain (visa vi the person shot in the head) , then everything is violence. Crushing a beer can before putting it into the garbage, tearing a sheet of paper, breaking a glass, grinding coffee beans.
A beer can, a sheet of paper, a glass, coffee beans. Those are all inanimate objects.
I see where you’re by going with this, or at least I think. Harm needs to be done on a human or an animal
Is it the potential of the thing being harmed therefore , to feel pain, or to be aware that harm was done, that defines harm, regardless of whether or not that is the case in the specific instance.
In other words, is harm dependent on having the potential to be aware and to feel?
Harm is dependent on being alive. So yes.
