The Lightning Network was conceptualized and designed by Joseph Poon and Thaddeus Dryja. The idea originated from their whitepaper titled “The Bitcoin Lightning Network: Scalable Off-Chain Instant Payments,” which was published in January 2016. The development of the Lightning Network is rooted in addressing the scalability issues of Bitcoin.
