Operators replaced by switches and touch tones. For the most part I prefer the "self-service" model for basic tasks, but we did give up a lot by taking humans out of the loop.
But there's the fact that retail is moving back to staff picking orders instead of the supermarket model is encouraging. "But I'm fussy about my produce" isn't turning out to be such a big deal after all. Good produce mgrs have already done most of that for you.
