This would be true if every life happened in isolation. But lives play out across a tableau of culture, against a backdrop of a hundred thousand years of history. We know which decision is better because it survives. A life well lived begets more life well lived.

It takes an odd blindness to see oneself as forging a lonely unguided path, while all the weight of history surrounds them with the evolved wisdom of tradition, and the more immediate example of a planet awash in all manner of lives lived in as many ways. To choose such a lonely way will lead to a lonely end.
