I myself did once and got eye infection and never wore contact lenses again...

In all the years I've done this I think I've only had one real infection from it. I have had friends actually rip the outer layer of their eye's lens from it drying inside and then it doing damage when it pulls loose though. I've just been lucky that I've never had any of those major issues from being so lazy 😆
