I've heard this before, but I don't understand. Isn't anything on social media able to be controlled, hacked, spread? What data would we take, and where would we take it?

Only you know your private key, so keep it safe. You can use your account on any client with your private key. The data moves with you and is not controlled by the client. You can also run your own Relay to store your own data.
