I don’t know where you are from, but where I come from the only reason is to be able to have eye contact with them in case of emergency.

Well I don’t. When you mean “while putting your child in the car” you mean opening the door or actually putting in a car seat?
Nonetheless, if it is a “child”, it should always sit behind the passenger because no matter how great your rear view mirror works, you can’t see properly a child behind the driver seat.
