Feeling accomplished 🫡 I just finished helping one of my leftmost-leaning family members set up a new VPN and move from Gmail to Proton.

Next step will be Signal, and then perhaps a service like Incogni or DeleteMe, although I’m not certain how useful those really are… (?)

Are there any nostr-native privacy tools (“other stuff”) that are worth recommending to a technology-competent newbie?

I still have some accounts that I need switches over. I’ve been so long engrained with the Gmail. I keep a lot of my fun stuff on proton though but can only create two free accounts at the moment.

Proton offers deals on their paid accounts pretty regularly, if that helps. With all the free stuff out there, I try to be pretty discerning about using a paid service, but proton is unequivocally worth the fee sats 🤙

Yea I really like proton as well. Maybe not how my emails come in but for the privacy / data part of it.

Downloaded mailfence as well

VPN, proton, and signal takes care of data in transit. Now need encryption for data at rest.

Meaning stuff like photos that would be stored in iCloud, or documents im Google Drive, for example?

Figuring Proton Drive would suffice for now, pretty user-friendly, if she wants to take that step.

One of my medium-term projects is to set up a proper home server with something like StartOS and offer storage to family and best friends for whoever wants it. But I need to “put on my own oxygen mask” (and learn what the hell I’m doing) first 😉

The reason I Use PGP, OMEMO, TOX, XMPP

Nice. Which tool did you wind up using to replace Gmail?

Oh. Proton.

Why Signal Tucker Carlson was just compromised useing Signal. I use Tox or XMPP with Omemo. My emails like proton are pgp encrypted. I am looking to help people get onto these.

Eventually we’ll have good tools build around what nostr:npub1zuuajd7u3sx8xu92yav9jwxpr839cs0kc3q6t56vd5u9q033xmhsk6c2uc is doing with MLS encrypted groups and WhiteNoise.

I think there’s a huge opportunity to get progressives on Nostr because it’s the only social media protocol that can provide real end to end encryption and privacy. Bluesky, threads, the fediverse, farcaster and the others have all given up on the idea of privacy as being too hard.

Everyone on the left is freaking out and searching for freedom tools. And not just posting. I just listed to a round table of digital activists talking about strategies for the next 4 years. They brought up the need for a financial system that can’t be shutdown. From the anti-cop city Black Lives Matter activists in Atlanta to abortion access mutual aid networks, they’re all facing being locked out of the baking system and looking for alternatives. Let’s get them the tools they want and need. The tech is for everyone.

Stoked to see what Jeff builds 🔥💥

And I’m in complete agreement. I’ve long thought that Bitcoin is as much a progressive movement as it is a conservative one. (I know I know, it’s an oxymoron, but like… it’s also kind of true). I straddle both traditional camps depending on the issue at hand, usually landing within a “classical liberal” perspective.

Most of my closest people are left-leaning at least, that was until I found Bitcoin and nostr, and now my people are truly everywhere 🫂

But yeah I am eager for opportunities to help those closest to me start to understand Bitcoin, privacy, and freedom tech in general, now that more of them are beginning to understand why it’s important 🫡
