In 14th-century Avignon, women worked as fruit-sellers, tailoresses, tavern-keepers, butchers, candlemakers, carpenters, and even sword-makers. In “The Manly Priest”, historian Jennifer Thibodeaux reminds us 15% of households were headed by women.
