Hypothetical: we get rid of lightning. What would be a better l2 architecture or even l1?

Liquid mby?
better at what?
Better as in less complicated and not requiring liquidity / open channels? I dunno, just wanna hear ideas.
Mints seem cool
It's all a balance of tradeoffs. Cashu and fedi mints allow users to not have to deal with channels and liquidity but it is custodial. However if we can make mints easy enough to run that the mint operator is only a few degrees of separation from the user, along with the privacy benefits of using a mint think it's a good trade off.
Would mints centralize to larger mints and become targets you think?
It's certainly possible. But Im not sure the incentive for that to happen is there. I don't think running a mint with ever be that profitable as it's to easy (will be too easy) to create a competing mint naturally leading to many small mints that users will be able to choose from. How users choose remaines to be seen, how much the trust the operator(s), if or what fee they charge, etc. I think it's fairly likely to go through a phase of only a few mints in early adoption but in order to be successful it will reach many smaller mints that have to compete.
Liquid is not bad for a federation approach. But it, and things like Fedimint and Cashu are all constrained by an incompatibility across instances. Even more problematic are solutions like Ark and Drive Chain that lead to centralization
No more LN and replaced with someone else? The results would most likely be a headache of clients and users dealing with different tokens. Headache with clients dealing with supporting tokens with their implementation and organization, headache for the user to learn about them and worry about scams and their fav clients not have what they want. That's all assuming your average crypto, unless somehow new tokens can be created on the same LN tech where addresses are the same (which I think this might be a possibility from what I remember some projects are trying to do, not sure).
In terms of a whole new thing... Create your own funny money based on a person's noun and send it? =P
Cashu, liquid, tendermint, hyper-nostr with 2/3 honest majority, there are so many

Ark for L2 maybe. Still trying to grok how vUTXOs work. But it has some buzz.
Bitcoin Cash.
