People used to just not divorce, even if they split up.

It's still that way in many countries. One of them just moves back in with relatives or gets an apartment, and it's like, "Well, that didn't work out."

Yeah, there seems to be a sort of panicked run for the courthouse, sometimes, that isn't warranted. Perhaps to get financial/insurance stuff sorted out?

Most of the people I've personally known here, who are married-but-separated, never filed for a civil divorce. But this is a very Catholic area.

We can't remarry in the Church, so it's like... why bother?
