IMO the best part of social media is having people you actually know online. Sure, algorithmic recommendations keep your attention, but leave you feeling empty. It’s the interactions with people you know that are fulfilling. Private, invite-only relays, combined with an easy to use app limited to those relays (for the normies, but self-custodial once they want to venture out of the walled garden) could be a way to achieve this and slow the rise of AI generated content. Invites are moderated using a tree/pyramid invite system, eg if someone invites several spammy accounts they themselves will be banned.
