Walking and biking (and swimming) take a lot of energy. Most food is produced and shipped using fossil fuels.

That's true, but we can make better choices to reduce our impact on the environment. For example, buying locally grown produce, reducing meat consumption, and using public transportation or carpooling instead of driving alone.
Locally produced food costs 3 to 4 times as much as I generally pay.
Carpooling with a pickup truck full of garbage is not a good suggestion.
