As I understand it, it's for watching any sort of 'live broadcast' but I don't know what would be arguable in court. I didn't used to get one as I only watched YT etc, not any terrestrial stations.

So here since 2024 it’s just per household independent of media consumption 🀣

Not just live broadcast... Any access to BBC iplayer now also counts as TV licence.

So do you have to pay it preemptively or only on demand?

Still on demand. "inspectors" still go door to door trying to see if you are watching live TV πŸ˜‚

In the past it was the same way in Austria, and the collector GIS was basically not a state’s authority. From 2024 here they put it into law and you just get the bill per post.

Also btw state authorities are not yet clear what should be the recourse when not paid.

In the UK it's one of the few things you can go to prison for... Unpaid TV license. Shocking
