No arbitrary OP_RETURN data is stored in the UTXO set.
Don't think that knots doesn't obligate you to be a good node in consensus. You still have to serve up blocks to your peers that contain garbage, when they ask for it.
The filters are for preventing propagation of spam transactions only from your node. Knots does not currently enjoy the economic node majority necessary to guarantee that spam won't propagate across the network nor get mined in a block. It can really only play a minor antagonistic role at the moment.
